Year of Yay 13.2 – Chinese New Year

i Feb 5th No Comments by

Mark your calendars everyone! On Saturday February 16 at 11:00 AM, Year of Yay 13.2 will depart from the Goodale Park open-air shelder near the playground. YoY 13.2′s theme is Chinese New Year.

For those of you keeping tabs at home, 2013 is the year of the snake.  People born in the year of the snake may become philosophers, theologians, politicians, or cunning financiers. The snake is the most enigmatic of the twelve zodiac animals. Such persons are elegant, and enjoy reading, listening to great music, tasting delicious food, and going to the theatre. They are fascinated with all beautiful things in life. Are you a snake?

Year of Yay 13.1 – Recap

i Jan 20th No Comments by

The first Year of Yay ride of 2013 was a smashing success. Almost 60 cyclists attended the event which meant that we split into two groups for the first time.

A view of a large portion of the group.

The route was 21 miles and we stopped at three different bakeries:

  1. Audino’s Italian Bakery
  2. Resch’s Bakery
  3. Cherbourg Bakery

I’ll have to admit. I had no idea where we were or where we were going at the beginning. Thankfully, we had a lot of experienced cyclists and after a few turns here and there, we arrived at Audino’s Italian Bakery at Clara Ave. and 11th Ave.

Pointing the way to the bakery.
Hello Audino’s!

From there, our next leg of the journey was almost 10 miles! It was like any old ride – a lot of pedaling but seeing areas of Columbus from a different perspective. And it was totally worth it when we arrived at Resch’s Bakery at Livingston Avenue and Yearling Rd.

Hello Resch’s!
Should I also get white cake? the weary cyclist thought.

The last stop was relatively nearby at 3.5 miles away. We went to the heart of Bexley to Drexel Avenue and Main Street to stop at Cherbourg Bakery.

Hello Cherbourg!
We know the secrets to the recipes now. Shh!

While some people carried on to Jury Room, I headed back to Goodale Park with most of the group. I ended up riding 34.5 miles over 3.5 hours. I was certainly glad to have had the opportunity to carbo load during the ride.

Keep an eye out for the next Year of Yay ride on February 16.

2012 December Year of Yay! Recap

i Dec 10th No Comments by

Dreary Day - Source: Weather Underground

On December 8, 2012, Yay Bikes! set out on the last Year of Yay! ride of 2012. While we all secretly wished for a sunny day, the rain, rain did not go away. But that didn’t deter the ~30 people or so from joining us!

We meander, rain or shine!

The first stop was unplanned but necessary. At many of the bike shelters around Columbus, there are maintenance stands with tools and a tire pump to do basic repairs on your bike.

Overlook the pressure of your tires? No problem at the maintenance stand!

After some quick tune-ups, we cycled up High Street and turned left on Lane Avenue to go to theTrek store. Lane Avenue is like nothing when you have a whole brigade of bikes!

A brigade of cyclists.

Time to buy supplies!

From Trek we headed for Stauf’s for a coffee pick-me up and lunch. The atmosphere was great and some people warmed up with soup!

A cluster of bikes.
#16! Yes, he really wanted his soup.

With our bellies full, we traveled onward and detoured to see some of the new bicycle facilities installed on Urlin Avenue and Watermark Drive near Dublin Road. There were mixed reactions to the bicycle facilities but they did not hinder our progress.

New bicycle facilities on Urlin Avenue.

En route to Pistacia Vera, we dropped by COSI to found out how much 30+ cyclists weigh. The answer? 4880 pounds.

And as expected, Pistacia Vera was the cherry on top at the end of our ride. And no, we did not see how much we weighed after dessert.

Finally, I want to throw out some recognition to our regular riders. In addition to some Yay Bikes! board members, a big shout out goes to Roger and John for attending each 2012 Year of Yay! event. Congratulations!

[Editor's note:You can see the complete set on Facebook here. Ray George took additional photographs which you can find here.]
