Bike Boulevard: Downtown – OSU (26 posts)

We’ve created our own Bike Boulevard connecting downtown and OSU….

    Low-traffic, tree-covered alternative.

Parallel with and between High and Neil.

Hunter Avenue is designated as a bicycle boulevard in the Columbus Bike Plan, but the City has not yet put up signs, added cyclist-friendly features or made Hunter two-way….

I’ve uploaded turn-by-turn directions for the Hunter Ave. Bike Boulevard.

Maps also available in the curb box at 960 Hunter.

Not seeing the map, but you might want to check the timeline. Could be done this year or in 10+ depending on which phase.

    Columbusite:

The Bike Plan doesn’t assign a time for doing anything for it, which is why we need to do it ourselves and encourage the City to adopt this low-cost/high-impact improvement right now.

(The plan does give dates  for other projects that are assigned a lower priority….)

I hope you get your bike boulevard built.  Incidentally, I’ve used Park Street to Buttles to Dennison to 3rd to Highland to 10th and 11th to College for many years now and find it an easy way to get from Downtown to Campus without having to use Neil Avenue or High Street.  I prefer Highland because of the traffic signal at Highland and 5th Avenue.

According to the Bicentennial Bikeway Plan, Hunter Ave bike boulevard is in phase 2 with an implementation of 2013-2018. The other bicycle boulevard that is a “demonstration project” is Bryden/Town or Oak St. But that project is also phase 2. I am unaware how the projects were prioritized by phases, and I’d have to study more to see what other Downtown/OSU routes are in phase 1. My feeling is that with the Olentangy trail and the existing Summit/4th signed shared roadways (routes 44, 49, 51) already providing north/south bikeway facilities, that there are other areas of town that the city wants to consider (i.e. east & west sides).

Speaking of signed shared roadways, there is an old map of some of the existing routes here: http://pubserv.ci.columbus.oh.us/transportation/GettingAround/GettingAround.htm

Ignore the part about the old Bikeway Advisory Committee. I will post on another forum about the first organizational meeting of the T&PC bicycle subcommittee.

Oh, and I forgot the High Street Share the road project!

You can find the phases for each project in Appendix H of the BBP, where there are tables to look up the projects by road name and to look up the phases of the projects. In the executive summary, the dates for phase 1 are through 2012 and phase 2 through 2018. I don’t know if there’s an end date for phase 3.

I would agree with you, Tricia, about there being some concentration on the north side where bicycle facilities are concerned; but I would disagree where Summit and Fourth are concerned.  These are two dangerous roads, especially at rush hour and where Fourth and Summit interchange with I-670 and along the viaducts and they should never have been given bike route status.

  • Avatar Image pkovacs said 1 month, 3 weeks ago:

The signed bike routes don’t cross 670, they turn at 2nd and 1st (depending on direction) and enter downtown on Park St. Dale Hooper designated the bike routes when he was bicycle coordinator. I think they did a good job on the choice of roads. You can see the routes on the link in the previous post on this topic. I wish they were clearly marked on the MORPC bike map.

I should add that the bike route roads (Neil, Summit & Fourth) are geared towards vehicular cyclists. The roads you use (Hunter, Highland, Dennison) are fine roads, too. Someone else posted previously that the choice of roads is dependent on the cyclist’s comfort level, time of day, day of week…

All I was trying to say was that I think the city is looking at other neighborhoods, and rightly so, IMHO.

    Tricia,

    Where did you find this?:

“According to the Bicentennial Bikeway Plan, Hunter Ave bike boulevard is in phase 2 with an implementation of 2013-2018.”

(I’ve been looking for a date since the report came out….)

Appendix H (see my earlier post).

I live on 1st, right by where Hunter becomes a brick alley.   I walk/ride/drive it all the time, and I can’t think of a change that’s been made in the past ten years that would have qualified as “Phase 1.”

  • Avatar Image Columbusite said 1 month, 3 weeks ago:

I really don’t see how a handful of cheap signs requires a 2-7 year waiting period. If the city would cut out one of their many road widening projects they’d have enough money to get phase 2 projects done alongside phase 1.

  • Avatar Image Yethu said 1 month, 3 weeks ago:

    Tricia,

Thanks for the correction on the scheduling.

(The trick to finding it is to look at the chart showing the phases by project number, because searching for “Hunter” or “Boulevard” doesn’t take you to the date or phase….)
