I read that the city will be dedicating a portion of the Alum Creek Trail as the Major Taylor Bikeway. The dedication by Mayor Coleman will be on this Friday, 9/3 at 3PM at Wolfe Park by the bridge. If you haven’t read the Andrew Ritchie biography, it’s really good.

It’s been too long since our last CM ride. I’ll lead one on Sunday, Sept 19 at 2PM from Westgate Park on the west side – approximately 11 miles. We’ll explore some of the planned routes in that part of town. Here’s a map:

Thank you, Rod, for adding your comments on the alternate routes. Sorry I forgot to include them in my notes. I was a little confused during the meeting if they are considering waiting for the new trail using the AEP ROW or if they’re still planning to use the Cooper Rd route. Please let us know [...]

I bought a new/old bike from Utagit on Goodale. Its an old JC Higgins made in England. It’s got a 3-speed Sturmey-Archer hub, fenders & rack, a really cool chain guard with a couple weird plates so you can remove the wheel without removing the chain guard, and remove the chain guard without removing the crank & pedal (which I didn’t figure out until I got the whole thing apart). I’m enjoying rebuilding it, but I won’t attempt to disasemble the rear hub. I looked at a picture on Sheldon Brown and I’m not that brave, so I just poured a bunch of ”fine machine oil” in the oil cap. The bottom bracket was full of gobs of grease, none of it near the bearings and races. I hope I finish it in time for Bike the CBus. -

I haven’t been seeing much activity on this forum lately. I rode to the Gahanna high school yesterday and was pleased to see about 6 bikes in the rack (one was a fixie with a pg sticker). Not much, you say, but last year I was only seeing zero or 1. So, a 600% improvement. I [...]

The sign at that corner has a “through traffic prohibited” sign. Maybe the “except bicycles” could be placed below that. I think the best lane for straight-through bicycles would be the left right turn-only lane. The bike route #51 turns left there, it should go straight to Arcadia, like the old bike map indicates:

Rod, I absolutely agree with you that would be a good idea. I’m not sure how the “except bicycles” sign could be placed, though. If you put it under a left turn-only or right turn-only sign, it could be interpreted to mean bicycles are not allowed to turn left or right. I will look around to [...]

When the intersection of 62 & Central College/Jug was updated recently to add a traffic signal, two “No left turn” signs were added at the intersection of Kitzmiller & Jug (heading north & west). I wrote to the New Albany Public Service Director (Marc Nemec) and they agreed to add “Except bicycles” to the signs. I [...]

We suggested alternatives to limit travel on Westerville Rd, including Corporate Dr or Old Dublin [...]
